Your Say In Sports

Purpose of 'Your Say In Sports'

Over the past several years I have been dealing with local sports in Brantford, Ontario.  In 2007, I had several comments in the local sporting community about not having enough say or a place to say what they want. So I decided to create a website, a place where people in Brantford, London, Cambridge, Kitchener, Hamilton, Caledonia, Simcoe, Port Dover, Paris or any surrounding city in Ontario can come together and have their say online about local sports.

The bottom line with this site is....the sport fan/parent can have THEIR SAY in what is going on in the local community. You don't have to ask permission, it's  YOUR SAY....YOUR THOUGHTS....YOUR KIDS.....YOUR PEERS....YOUR SAY IN SPORTS. Be sure to check out and use the Forum and Facebook pages, that will give you quick and easy access to  post any registrations/events/pictures/scores/press releases/cancellations you may have for local sports.

At the end of August 2009 I have decided to offer interviews with Your Say In Sports. If you have an event or athlete you'd like promoted, shoot me an e mail.

SILVER LAKE ROWERS WIN GOLD AT ONTARIO SUMMER GAMES

Eryk Taylor and Josh Azzopardi didn’t have much rest after the Royal Canadian Henley having been invited to represent the Southwest District at the 2010 Ontario Summer Games rowing event held in Sudbury on Wednesday. But the few hours of sleep paid off with a gold medal.

Rowing in a field of 36 under 17 male competitors drawn from across the province, Azzopardi and Taylor teamed up with rowers from Guelph and Welland to win the Men’s Coxed Quad event. They had just wrapped up the competitive rowing season at the Royal Canadian Henley Regatta on Saturday and had little time to get packed up and off to Sudbury where they came together as a crew for the first time to train briefly before competing. According to Southwest District Coach Mindy Bullen of the London Rowing Club “Our rowers bonded quickly and showed great focus at this event. I was very proud of this team!”

Paris Grand Ladies League

This past Wednesday (August 11) Paris Grand had a beautiful, sunny, HOT evening of golf with over 40 ladies making it out for nine holes.

Closest to the pin on their second shot on #14 was Kelly McComb, who won a gift certificate to M&M Meat Shops for a family dinner.

Next week we'll have our pro, Russ Mabini back to play Pro's Drive on the dreaded #8. He'll give the ladies a bit of a break and take their drive for them so they don't have to face the ravine if they don't want to.

HENLEY GOLD FOR LOCAL ROWERS!

Several Silver Lake rowers present and past made their mark at North America’s largest regatta by winning Henley gold at the 128th annual Royal Canadian Henley Canadian Regatta.

Caleb McCleary of Burford started the gold rush by winning the Junior Men Single event. McCleary advanced to the semi-final by winning his heat with the fastest overall time of over 70 competitors drawn from across North America. In his semi-final, McCleary advanced to the final with the second fastest overall time. “In the final, I took the lead at about the 1000 meter mark but it was close all the way” said McCleary. “It was only in the last 500 meters when I started to pull away.” McCleary had a commanding four second lead at the finish.

Tyler Wilson and Zac Azzopardi also advanced to the final in the Under 23 Lightweight Men Double event where they placed fifth overall. Eryk Taylor advanced to the semi-final in the Under 17 Men Single event with the sixth fastest time out of over 50 competitors. However, Taylor did not advance to the final. “Eryk is such a competitor” said Head Coach Sue Fairley. “He puts everything on the line each race regardless. He had two races before his single race – all the same day. He simply didn’t have enough energy left to pull it out of the hat.”

The Silver Lake Rowing Club also had an entry of Azzopardi and McCleary in the Junior Men’s Double event. However, the crew had a mishap on the way to the starting gates that resulted in damage to their boat and some minor injuries to both rowers. Their race was delayed to allow them time to regroup. “Caleb and Zac just hopped in another boat without any rigging adjustments and rowed an incredible race placing third in their heat.” Even though their third place finish time was faster than the first place time in five other heats and the second place time in two other heats, McCleary and Azzopardi failed to advance to the semi-finals as they needed a second place finish. According to Fairley, “They were contenders for gold. It was a heartbreak to watch the final knowing it could have been them racing to the finish.”

A Henley gold medal is one of the most sought after medals in the North American rowing circuit being North America’s largest regatta. McCleary’s gold represents the second gold medal a Silver Lake rower has won at the Royal Canadian Henley. This year the Silver Lake Rowing Club was represented by:

·         Josh Azzopardi (Simcoe)

·         Zac Azzopardi (Simcoe)

·         Caleb McCleary (Burford)

·         Eryk Taylor (Simcoe)

·         Tyler Wilson (Simcoe)

Silver Lake alumni were also present and making their mark. Ian Edwards of Langton, a former student of Holy Trinity, won gold in the Senior Men Single dash rowing for the Guelph Rowing Club. Terry Lovegrove of Simcoe, a former student of Simcoe Composite, also won gold in the Senior Men Eight dash rowing for the St. Catharines Rowing Club. Former Holy Trinity rower Mike Veltri of Simcoe advanced to the final in the Under 23 Lightweight Men Pair event representing the Guelph Rowing Club.

According to Jim Dover President Silver Lake Rowing Club “I remember when John Brinkman, a past President of our club, said that one of our club’s success measures would be having our athletes continue to row past high school. Not only are they continuing to row, some of them are beating the best in North America!”

SILVER LAKE CREWS MEDAL AT ONTARIO CHAMPIONSHIPS

Local rowers captured silver and bronze medals as four out of six entries from the Silver Lake Rowing Club advanced to the finals at the Ontario Championships held in Welland last weekend.

On Saturday, Caleb McCleary and Zak Azzopardi won their heat in the Under 19 Men Double to advance to the final where they narrowly missed gold in a photo finish. On Sunday, Zak Azzopardi rowed up in his age category to combine with Tyler Wilson in the Under 23 Lightweight Men Double. Wilson and Azzopardi advanced to the final by winning their heat. In the final, they won bronze in a race fought from start to finish. Only three seconds separated the first three boats at the finish.

Also on Sunday, Caleb McCleary won his heat in the Under 19 Men Single event. McCleary had  the third fastest time overall in the heats even though he was unchallenged throughout his heat. Unfortunately, McCleary had to scratch from the final due to injury. According to Head Coach Sue Fairley “Caleb was wanting to see what he could do in the final but we had to think longer term. Hopefully, he’ll get another chance to show his potential at the Royal Canadian Henley.”

Eryk Taylor advanced to the final in the Under 17 Men Single and placed fifth in the final. Taylor also teamed up with Josh Azzopardi in the U17 Men Double event where they placed third in their heat but failed to advance. Robyn Millson and Frankie Martin-Dodds placed third in their heat in the U19 Women Double.

According to Fairley “Our rowers showed this weekend they are contenders amongst the best from across Ontario. But the competition is going to be a lot stronger at the Royal Canadian Henley where crews come from across North America to compete. So, we’ve got less than a week to find ways to become just that much faster if we want to get to the finals there.”
